Lebaran or Idul Fitri is the popular name for Eid al - Fitr in Indonesia and is one of the major national holidays in the country.
Idul Fitri marks the end of fasting in the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims across the world. The fasting which spans about 30 days, comes to an end following the sighting of the moon on the island.
When the moon is sighted, Muslim religious leaders will make an announcement of the same so that all Muslims on the island break the fast at the same time.
After the announcement, mass prayer sessions are held at the mosque as well as in public places across the island.
Local Muslims visit each other in the spirit of togetherness and also feast together on this special day by cooking the signature dish known as 'ketupat'.
On Idul Fitri Festival, it is considered auspicious to make donations to those who are less fortunate.
The festival is incomplete without asking for forgiveness from others for anytime that one may have erred.
Other than shopping for typical food and kue kering (cookies) for Lebaran, Indonesians usually will buy and wear new clothes and footwear.
Many banks, government and private offices are closed for the duration of the Lebaran festivities.
